Holland's Homegrown: Rapper, Producer Dave909

He’s the co-founder of A & D Records, former working disc jockey, now hip hop producer and rap artist Dave909. He is also known by musicians and producers as a top cat when it comes to sound. He's not afraid to go hard applying edge to his sound. A Dave909 track is heavily influenced by the art and practice of entertaining a party crowd.

The influence on his sound starts in his city. Growing up, there was "an ‘each his own’ kinda vibe ... characterful and vibrant.” He tells HHND that when he started out dj'ing,

“[Clubbing] had its best years around the time I was old enough to go out so, of course I took full advantage of that. I got a lot of inspiration listening to dance music and the DJs doing their thing in the clubs there. It's what got me interested in dj'ing and to just be busy with music all the time.”

Hip hop and rap came into his life and music in his high school years which is around the same time he started practicing the art of scratching vinyl. He and a friend would sneak into a popular club on Sundays, when the club was closed, and scratch discs all day.

"His dad was the owner and so he would find a way to get the keys without his dad knowing. We could play music and drink as much as we wanted, as long as we never got caught. It was a great place for me to just practice mixing. I started to play at some clubs when I got good at it."

His exposure to hip hop music and culture also came via interviewing underground graffiti artists for a local graff-artist paper he and his friends started running as a pirate-school project. He and fellow journalists would visit artists on-site. They covered all the local artists they could meet, finding out what motivated them and how they picked up their skills. They handled every aspect of publishing, from film cutting to printing, all to put out their indie paper.

It was about 2009, while producing instrumental tracks for local hip hop artists in Belgium that his own hip hop career sparked.  "One day I just went for it and recorded a verse I wrote." That led to more than 80 completed tracks in only a few years (did I forget to mention, he's a REASON freak, which producers will recognize as a leading production software application). His solid background mixing and creating his own entertaining grooves paid off when he combined it with his original songs.

Here's a Dave909 original instrumental with vocals by the rapper and myself on a collaboration project we just released as the rap duo AD5909 . He thinks it makes a dope song because of  the "rawness and live kind of sound of the vocals and the beat driving it all from underneath."

His "So Far So Good" EP is full of memorable sounds and storytelling. His inspiration he says, "it comes out of everything really. Things I experience, things I went thru." The song "Ik Meen Het" is an example of an original dark-groove track where Dave909 combines his "feel good sound" while describing a painful breakup.

He makes English translations of his lyrics available for non-Dutch listeners who enjoy his sound and clear flow. Though he asks for everyone who reads them, to keep in mind that translations can not capture the nuances and wordplay, from language to language.
