Dilla’s Delights

J. Dilla’s uncle Herman Hayes is honoring his late nephew with a Detroit donut shop called Dilla’s Delights. Uncle Herm, a former baker at Avalon, is looking to open the store in October or November in Harmonie Park.

Uncle Herm used to bring Dilla donuts as a child. “He was on his deathbed making “Donuts”, and I felt like that was partly a tribute to me,” Hayes told The Detroit News. “I felt I should honor that and respect that and give back to him.” Uncle Herm plans to use all organic ingredients to create 20 different donuts with names inspired by Dilla’s life and work. Examples include the Conant Gardens Glaze, Fantastic Fritters, and McNasty Macaroons. The shop’s soundtrack is set to include vinyl by Dilla and the artists he sampled.
